A Little Piece of Heaven

“My soul is in the sky.”
- William Shakespeare

I just booked a ticket to Burning Man and my heart is soaring. This event that takes place every year is an incredible experience that I think everyone should have at least once in their lives. It’s a place of freedom, diversity, acceptance, love, art, and just about anything else you can think of. Check the website out if you’d like to learn more.

Flying in an airplane is one of the ways that make me feel a part of everything and everyone. Just looking out the window and seeing how tiny everything looks or being engulfed in clouds makes me feel like I am home. I need to fly more often! I leave a little piece of my soul up there everytime I travel.

What Are You Looking For?

“What we see depends mainly on what we look for.”
- John Lubbock

This is so true! When I find myself looking for the bad in a situation or person…that’s exactly what I find. The opposite is true as well…when I look for the good in a person or situation, guess what I see more of? Yup! Good!

Simple really and yet not easy. It’s much easier to focus on the negative…we have to retrain ourselves to look for the positive no matter what the outside world is showing us. How many times have you been having a great day, everything just comes together and you’re smiling away…maybe 5 good things happen and yet, you hit a bump in the road and someone is nasty to you…say, a sales clerk is rude, a driver cuts you off, etc.

Do you find yourself focusing on that instead of the 5 good things that happened? At the end of your day, do you talk about the good things or do you focus on the not so good thing and tell everyone you talk to about it?

It just seems easier to focus on the negative for some reason…but it’s soooo possible to retrain ourselves and soooo worth it to do so! Today I am going to look for the good in every person and situation and see what happens, how about you?

Me? Meditate?

“Still the bubbling mind; herein lies freedom and bliss eternal.”
-Swami Sivananda

I remember a time when I thought meditation was for granola eating, hemp wearing, hippie love sh*t kinda folks. It was a long time ago when I was a teenager and thought I knew everything. I believed the people that engaged in meditation were trying to escape and were tuning out so they wouldn’t have to deal with “reality”.

Little did I know that they were tuning in to all that is. It took me a long time to see that raging against what I thought were the injustices of the world just created more of the same. I was totally focused on what was “wrong” in life and that was all I saw.

Focusing inward has helped me to see more of what is real. It has helped me to find an inner peace which reflects in my outer world. I can’t help but wonder what would happen if everyone took the time to go within and really came to know who they are and what they are a part of, would we then all be seeing and feeling a utopian kind of planet? I’m betting yes ;o)

Meditation doesn’t have to be difficult. It can be as simple as taking five minutes in the morning to breath deeply and be still before you jump out of bed and begin your day. It’s incredible what a difference those five minutes can make!

You don’t have to eat granola or wear hemp to meditate. Wearing a suit and being involved in worldly matters doesn’t preclude you from being a spiritual being who needs food for your soul. In fact, the more involved we are in the “outside” world the more we need to develop our “inside” world in order to cope and grow.

I meditate daily now but I still don’t eat granola or wear hemp ;o)
