Building Self Confidence through Positive Self Talk

Whether you’re at work or just facing a bad day at home, there are many things you can do to make sure you’re back in the saddle and feeling more confident about life. One of the best ways to regain your self-confidence is to give yourself a little pep talk.
The idea of positive self-talk, or positive thinking, is something many coaches and counselors suggest to their clients and nearly everyone can benefit from it. Have you ever been in a situation where you think a little bit of positive reinforcement could make things a lot easier? Don’t wait for someone else to lift your spirits; take a moment and realize you can easily do it yourself!
Be Proactive and Gain Confidence
Having negative thoughts, even about a single project at work, can often impact your entire outlook on life. You may begin to believe that you’re in a trap of bad luck or that things will never get better, but in reality, the only way for things to get better is to make positive changes and that takes both action and self-confidence.
- When faced with a difficult situation that leaves negative feelings, step away for a few minutes and take some deep breaths. Think about a resolution to the problem, come up with a smart action plan, then return to propose your plan. Removing yourself from the situation will help minimize those negative feelings while allowing you to gain some perspective.
What Makes You Special?
Another way to lift your spirits and give yourself a confidence boost is to remind yourself of your accomplishments, both at home and at work.
- Did a client praise your work? Have you been promoted? Do co-workers come to you for advice? Do friends marvel at your decorating flair? Each person is so much more complex than what’s visible on the outside. Allow yourself to delve deeper into your soul and treasure what makes you unique.
Rediscover your personal strengths or hobbies that make you proud and happy.
- Do you love to cook? Have you traveled extensively? Do you play an instrument? Do you play competition sports? These are all accomplishments you should be proud of because you took the time to develop these different facets of your life.
Think about the journey you took to reach those accomplishments. If something was too easy, you may place less importance on the final outcome, but when you are able to face and overcome serious challenges, it makes you a stronger and more determined person.
How Do I Use Positive Self-Talk?
The term positive self-talk might scare some people away, thinking it involves talking to yourself out loud. Although you may choose to say positive affirmations out loud, it’s enough to just think positively about your accomplishments and what makes you special.
If you’re having trouble thinking about your strengths, sit down in a quiet spot and make a list of everything that makes you unique. Taking some extra time to write these things down will help reinforce them in your mind.
- Once the list is written, post it in a place where you’ll see it everyday. Starting your day positively will make the small nuisances disappear.
If necessary, make copies of these lists so you can take one with you. Anytime you feel down or upset, take out your list and read it. You are a fabulous person and this list proves it!
This list isn’t written in stone; it should be a continuously changing list, just as we continuously change ourselves. So be sure to constantly add to your list as you achieve more accomplishments!
Everyone Can Benefit From Positive Thinking
As you build your self-confidence with positive self-talk, you might feel silly at first but you’ll still benefit from the experience. Whenever you feel overwhelmed, stop and give yourself a little pep talk. Reassure yourself that you’re strong, that you can get through anything, and that success is within your grasp.
- Remembering that everyone goes through ups and downs in life will help you face the day more positively.
Thoughts and feelings are what make us human. Everyone experiences negative emotions, but if these negative feelings seem to cling to you everyday, then finding ways to dissolve that negative energy can be empowering.
Your life is yours to control so don’t wait for others to help. Positive thinking and positive self-talk can help you come out of the darkness and into the light.
From Impossible to Possible

“The impossible can always be broken down into possibilities.”
Unknown
I like this quote in that it reminds me if I have a huge dream to take baby steps to get to it. If I try to jump from Point A to Point Z in my mind, I can often freak myself out and that can lead to me letting go of even attempting to accomplish whatever it is I’m wanting to do. But if I take it from point a to point b to point c…well then, nothing really seems impossible does it.
The impossible is only impossible until it isn’t!

This Lou Holtz quote on life is a great reminder that although we may not have complete control over what happens in our lives, we do have a choice in how we respond to what life throws our way.
Our choices are what makes us who we are. Each choice takes you on a different path so choose wisely!

Putting Your Positive Action into Overdrive
June 19, 2009 by Maureen

If you are seeking success in your life, you will need to learn how to take positive action every day to accomplish your goals. After all, doing the least amount of work will likely lead to mediocre results, so instead, put your actions into overdrive and make the most of your efforts.
You can truly make every action you take a positive one that builds momentum and propels you forward. You’ll feel better about what you’re doing, and your gusto for life will inspire those around you.
Turning Positive Action into a Positive Life
When you put your best foot forward in all that you do, you’ll develop an intense passion that will be unmatched. Sometimes you may feel like sitting back and doing as little as possible, but you’ll actually enjoy your life more when you are engaged in the things you love to do.
Life is more fulfilling when you are passionate about your work and family. Even though it may seem challenging to look at everything with passionate and positive eyes, such an outlook is possible. If you’re unsure how you can summon more passion for a project or task, there is one tool that will help you build momentum by utilizing the power of a positive mindset. So what is it? Positive affirmations!
What Are Affirmations All About?
Affirmations can help you take positive action by re-defining how you think and feel. In essence, affirmations are positive statements that activate your mind and encourage you to push forward. Once you implement affirmations into your life, negative, self-defeating thoughts will be a thing of the past.
If you need a positive thought, for example, you can say something as simple as, “I infuse my mind, heart, and spirit with past accomplishments, new ideas, and a fresh attitude.” Constantly repeating positive affirmations will help you create a positive outlook in just about any situation imaginable.
Positive affirmations allow you to set your goals, envision them, and reaffirm them each time you state it. This positive statement only needs to be something you desire for yourself and through continued repetition, you can make it your reality. After all, words are powerful because they have the ability to elicit emotion and inspire action.
Affirmations are generally very simple, but they can help you make lasting changes in your life, one step at a time. If you are having a hard time finding the motivation, try an affirmation such as, “I am building momentum with each step I take.” As long as your actions are congruent with your positive mindset, you will begin to see and feel results nearly instantly.
Affirmations have the power to change the way you think and feel about yourself. Millions of people are using affirmations every day to help them become happier, healthier, and more balanced individuals. You can put your actions into overdrive and accomplish more in less time. After all, if words can move mountains, imagine what you will be able to do when your thoughts, attitudes and actions are aligned!

Combat Negative Thinking with Positive Self Talk
June 16, 2009 by Maureen
Filed under Overcoming Obstacles, Positive Affirmations, Positive Steps, Positive Thinking
Do you talk yourself out of being excited and hopeful every time you feel good about yourself? Do you often start out feeling confident in yourself and your abilities, and then drop to zero confidence when your inner dialogue kicks in?
This negative thinking is something many people struggle with, but there’s a better way.
You can combat negative thoughts with positive-self talk instead of letting an automatic negative thought process rule your life.
Negative Thinking, Positive Self-Talk, and You
Many people lack the confidence to realize that they deserve to feel good about themselves. These people never pay attention to the fact that they are the ones telling themselves that they don’t deserve rewards.
Are you one of these people? You can discover if you are sabotaging yourself by tuning into your thoughts and listening. What do you hear? Are you encouraging yourself with positive thoughts? Or are your thoughts filled with negatives?
- You may not even realize how negative thinking may be dominating your life. This may be something that you deal with daily and have come to see as normal. However, it’s only normal if you allow it to be that way!
Positive self-talk is the practice of responding to negative thoughts that run through your mind. For example, when you tell yourself that you can’t possibly land the job because you aren’t good enough, you can respond with positive thoughts that do not leave room for negativity. These thoughts can be as simple or complex as you like. The important thing is that you continue to think positively.
- Positive self-talk allows you to be the one controlling your thoughts!
Many people pair positive self-talk with affirmations. Affirmations are simple statements you can repeat to yourself over and over again. You can allow these thoughts to become true for you. The process is as subconscious as it is conscious.
When you continue to reaffirm the positive thought, you will make it true for yourself until you eventually don’t need to remind yourself to think that way.
- Affirmations are positive statements that replace your negative thought processes. You can change your life one thought at a time!
When you are feeling low and thinking negatively about yourself or your future, try saying, “I give myself permission to be successful,” or “I see myself in the winner’s circle.”
Strive to replace your negative statements with positive thoughts when you repeat your affirmations. Soon it will become second nature to repeat your affirmations anytime that you start to think negatively.
- With positive self-talk you can truly change the course of your life. You can go from being a negative person with no hope for the future, to being an optimist who can achieve anything you put you mind to.
Does this mean that there won’t be challenges along the way, or that you’ll never fail? No, because those things are a part of life. But what it will mean is that you’ll have a better attitude, which will allow you to grasp the very best that life has to offer.
Positive self-talk isn’t difficult and it’s worth the effort that is involved because it can truly change the way you view yourself and the world that you live in.
Build Wealth with Positive Thinking
June 16, 2009 by Maureen
Filed under General, Positive Steps, Positive Thinking
To achieve any kind of great success, you must first believe that you’re capable of achieving that success. Great sports stars can suddenly begin having lousy performances if they suddenly feel they can’t perform well or live up to their coach’s high expectations. Writers and musicians suddenly have their wellsprings of inspiration dry up if they no longer “feel it” or if they suddenly lose confidence in their creative abilities.
The same is true in our own lives. You don’t have to be famous for your boss to have high expectations of you at work. Our families also have certain expectations and if you cave under the pressure, your performance might suffer and your negative thoughts will infiltrate other areas of your life.
You’re Worthy of Achieving Wealth and Success
When it comes to building wealth, we have to believe that we can see ourselves becoming more and more wealthy. It doesn’t matter how smart we might be, or how talented we are, or whether we’re sitting on top of the best business opportunity to come along in our lifetime, if we don’t believe in ourselves, we’ll have a hard time building wealth.
Wealth flows to those who believe they deserve it. It flows to those who envision it in their hands, their bank accounts, and their lives.
Even in your darkest hours when you’re trying to build wealth in your life, when times are tough and the seas of your world are troubled, you have to continue to see great wealth in your life. If it all seems to be happening too slowly, have patience.
Those who “know” something good is coming their way can always afford to be patient and safe in their knowledge that what they’re yearning for is within their grasp.
You’ll Survive the Difficult Times
Earlier I mentioned sports. One of the great coaches in professional sports history, Vince Lombardi, said the time when you really need to believe in yourself is not when everything is going your way. You need to believe in yourself when everyone doubts you.
It’s easy to have confidence when everything is naturally falling into place! But where is your confidence when you need it the most? Obviously, it can be tough to maintain a positive mindset when others get down on you, but to help improve your outlook, try to surround yourself with people who believe in you and are supportive of your goals. Engaging with others who share your enthusiasm will lift your spirits and help block out negative thoughts.
When you have a positive mindset about creating wealth, you’ll continue to do what feels right even when the darkness descends and everything seems like chaos. When no one else believes in you, you’ll still be able to take inspired action and, by constantly moving forward, you’ll attract the wealth that you desire.
But none of this can happen unless you begin with a clear vision. You have to see yourself with the wealth and abundance you desire and deserve. Each day, take a moment to find a quiet place and see yourself with the financial freedom, flexibility, and life you desire!
Benjamin Franklin Happiness Quote

“Happiness depends more on the inward disposition of mind than on outward circumstances.”
Benjamin Franklin
If we let outer circumstances dictate our inner circumstances I’m pretty sure most of us would be miserable human beings.
We need learn to go within for our happiness. What I’ve realized over the years is that when I depend on myself to make myself happy…my outer world reflects that and the happiness that I generate within manifests without! How cool is that!

I love this quote as it reminds me that the more opportunities I take advantage of when they come my way, the more opportunities will come my way.
It also reminds me that if I get lazy and decide to wait on things or procrastinate, the opportunities slow down or stop. If you take one step in the direction of your dreams, the Universe will take a step towards you and send you all kinds of opportunities to help you reach your goals.
So keep an eye out for any opportunity that comes your way and jump at the chance to take advantage of it!

Sayings and quotes about success can have a powerful effect on you. If you take the time to think about the deeper meaning behind the words, you’ll realize how easily you can apply these sayings into your own life to achieve the success you desire.
Here are the top ten inspirational success quotes, as well as some self-reflection questions to ponder:
1. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed. – Michael Jordan
- Every failure brings an opportunity for growth and sets you up for future success in a new effort. For example, failing at one job may bring you the opportunity to enjoy great success in another. Learning from failure will lead you to greater achievement.
2. It is no use saying, “We are doing our best.” You have got to succeed in doing what is necessary. – Sir Winston Churchill
- Too often, people use “I did my best” as an excuse for not doing what really needed to be done. Plan and prepare appropriately for the task at hand so that you can do what is required to succeed. Using this results-oriented strategy will help you accomplish your goal.
3. We are told that talent creates its own opportunities. But it sometimes seems that intense desire creates not only its own opportunities, but its own talents. – Eric Hoffer
- Try new things to spark your passions and develop your talents. You may actually have talents that you’re completely unaware of. When you desire something with a fiery passion, your mind will push you to take action and persevere until you’re successful.
4. We were born to succeed, not to fail. – William Barclay
- You were put on the Earth to succeed in your pursuits. When you use your God-given gifts, abilities, and strengths to fulfill your purpose, success is within your grasp.
5. Success is not the key to happiness – happiness is the key to success. – Herman Cain
- When you’re happy with your life and you enjoy every moment of each day, it’s easy to feel the joy of success in the smallest accomplishments. Live joyfully and your positive attitude will attract greater successes.
6. Success doesn’t come to you – you go to it. – Marva Collins
- You need to take action to achieve your goals and get what you want out of life. Once you define exactly what you want, design a plan of action steps to get you there, and then follow your plan.
7. You must do the thing you think you cannot do. – Eleanor Roosevelt
- This quote is to challenge you. You must overcome your fears that are holding you back in order to become successful.
8. A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position. – John Maxwell
- Believe in yourself. Know that you can achieve anything. Put your mind to it and be passionate about that which calls your name.
9. Forget about the consequences of failure. Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success. – Denis Waitley
- When you fail, opportunities open up to help you succeed. You may need to start your task anew or change your route, but each failure brings you closer to success.
10. Success is not measured by what you accomplish, but by the opposition you have encountered and the courage with which you have maintained the struggle against overwhelming odds. – Orison Swett Marden
- No matter how tough a situation may be, don’t give up easily. When you persevere through great odds and overcome many challenges to achieve your goal, success is even sweeter!
Here are a few questions to reflect on when it comes to your own personal feelings about success:
1. When I suffer a setback, do I still persevere toward my goal?
2. Do I bring passion to my endeavors?
3. Have I designed my action plan to reach my goals? Have I taken swift action to get where I want to be?
Create a Winning Attitude
June 11, 2009 by Maureen
Filed under Feeling Positive, Overcoming Obstacles, Positive Action
Your attitude can make or break you. It’s virtually indisputable that your attitude determines how far you’ll go in life and a positive mental outlook can help you achieve optimal success.
Having a positive mental attitude helps you cope with challenges. When you’re put to the test, you’re more likely to find your inner strengths to overcome adversity, and that strength just might be your winning attitude. Whether or not you have the tools, skills, knowledge, or resources, your attitude can get you through tough times and come out on top.
On the other hand, an attitude filled with negative overtones makes everything much harder. You can’t win when you go into the contest prepared to lose! If you expect to do well, your attitude will create positive, winning thoughts that help you succeed.
Cause and Effect
It’s important to realize that for every effect in our lives, there’s a specific cause. Through positive thoughts, we can control these causes and change effects or outcomes.
- In order to change your future for the better, you must first alter your thoughts in the present.
For every positive seed you plant, your thoughts will grow and reward you with a positive harvest. Negative seeds have the opposite effect. They’ll grow, but result in a spoiled and fruitless crop. You can’t plant negative seeds in your mind and expect positive results. It just doesn’t work that way.
A vivid and defining difference between people who are successful and those who aren’t is the way they think. Successful people visualize their goals and take action to make them happen.
Unsuccessful people dwell on the negative, spend their time and energy complaining, and worry about things that are unimportant. This negativity wastes time and energy that could be harnessed toward achieving your goals.
Practice Makes Perfect
If you hone your positive thinking skills and develop the mental attitudes of a winner, you’ll be able to overcome challenges without giving up. No matter how discouraging things may get or how intently others may try to dissuade you, with your winning attitude, you will be unstoppable!
A positive outlook enables you to focus on your goals with a tunnel vision that eliminates negative distractions and keeps you on a chartered course to success.
- Train your mind to focus on the good. Develop a positive mantra or affirmation to help you overlook the negative and realize the power of optimism.
Train Your Mind
We often worry about our physical fitness, but do we think much about the fitness of our minds? Just as we train our bodies for peak performance, we must also train our minds by coaching ourselves to think winning thoughts.
An effective way to train your mind is to look at challenges as opportunities instead of obstacles. A problem is only a problem if you allow it to be one. With each challenge comes an opportunity to learn and improve. So if you search for solutions, you’ll find them.
When you internalize this mindset, you’re sure to develop a winning attitude for a lifetime and reap the rewards of true success and happiness.

Achieving Supreme Health with Affirmations
June 10, 2009 by Maureen
Many of us wish to lose weight or get in better shape. Perhaps you’re concerned about your health and have made the decision to take better care of your body. Are there things you could be doing to be healthier? If so, you’re not alone!
When you choose the right foods and exercise, you’ll look and feel better, reduce your stress levels, sleep more soundly, have more energy, and enjoy better health. Sometimes, though, making the right choices isn’t as easy as it sounds, is it?
The good news is there are some simple things you can do to help make positive choices and achieve the better health you deserve!
Do You Need More Motivation?
If the alarm went off 45 minutes early in the morning so you can exercise before heading into the office, how would you react? Would you reply with negativity and tell yourself that skipping one day won’t hurt, or that exercise is pointless?
When you pass that fast food store with the $1.39 burgers and you’re low on time and big on hunger, what choice do you usually make? Eating healthier isn’t always as easy as picking up convenient, greasy foods. But would you go the extra mile for a healthy meal?
What about sleep? In addition to exercising and eating right, you also need to get enough sleep to live a healthy lifestyle. When you don’t sleep well, you’ll be less inclined to make healthy food and exercise decisions.
Sleeping well helps you become more energetic and passionate about all things in your life, including your commitment to your health!
It can be difficult to get enough rest when there are things you’d rather be doing!
Do you give up your sleep if you have work to do? Do you stay up late partying whenever you can?
Affirmations for Health Can Help!
In those moments when you feel weak and you don’t want to eat right, get enough sleep, or exercise, affirmations targeting your health can be just what you need to help you make the healthy choice.
Affirmations are positive statements that replace the negative thought processes in your mind. If you think they don’t work, I have news for you – do they ever!
When you start to talk yourself out of exercising, a negative affirmation is being repeated in your mind. An affirmation that says “I can’t do it.” So if a negative affirmation works, why can’t a positive one?
When you’re about to choose the junk foods instead of the good stuff, repeating an affirmation in your mind will remind you of your desire to be healthier and help you become more consciously and subconsciously aware of your healthy living goals.
For example, you can say, “I allow my body to receive enough rest and exercise,” or “The more I take care of myself, the better I feel.” Using statements like these will give you that gentle push you need when you feel inclined to be pessimistic.
Strive to repeat healthy living affirmations to yourself several times each day and whenever you need encouragement. It will take a bit of time, but, soon enough, you’ll find yourself making healthy decisions more and more often.
The more often you choose the healthy lifestyle you desire, the better you’ll feel, both physically and mentally. Make the commitment to your health by incorporating healthy living affirmations into your daily routine today!

Have you ever seen ants marching in search of food? They just follow one another in an almost endless game that seems to drone on and on. Does your life feel like an ant’s life – as if you’re going from day to day, doing the same thing, the same way, and nothing ever changes?
If so, then there’s a very good probability you’re not living consciously.
Conscious living is being aware of your life and the things you’re doing. It’s about taking the time to stop and smell the roses so you can see where you fit into the whole picture. Living consciously is a vital component in enjoying the fleeting moments we have on Earth.
It’s important to take note of what’s going on around us and be aware of what we’re doing. Living consciously brings us an understanding of what we’re capable of doing and paves the way for us to get where we want to go.
Benefits of Conscious Living
Perhaps you’re wondering, “What’s in it for me?” Conscious living brings with it many benefits, which you may already be seeking in your life.
Here are just a few of these benefits:
1. Relieve stress. Conscious living can be a great stress reliever. Not only does it make life more enjoyable when you alleviate your stress, but it also makes you healthier. Stress affects every process in our bodies and can cause serious disease if it builds up within us.
2. Expand your horizons. As you become more aware of your surroundings, you’ll find that you can better understand the world and your place in it.
3. Live in the moment. Throughout the day, you’ll be more focused on your work because you’re consciously acting on a specific task in the moment.
4. Enjoy more passion in your relationships. While living consciously, your relationships will become more meaningful because you’ll be appreciative of them as well as the other person. You’ll be more in tune with your partner and aware of every want and need.
5. Know your importance. Your job will become more fulfilling because you’re more conscious of your role in the grand scheme of things. You no longer just answer a phone or hand someone a photocopy, but you are consciously making a difference.
6. Bring color into your world. Your surroundings will become more vibrant because you’ll notice things like the subtle differences between the shades of the trees and the direction of the soft breeze.
7. Being conscious of life makes life more fun. When you’re living consciously, bad days are few and far between.
Action Steps to Living Consciously
Luckily, transforming your humdrum life into one filled with vibrant joy is easier than you may think! You can make some simple adjustments to your everyday routines to live consciously and more fully enjoy your life.
Here are some action steps you can take to bring conscious living to your life:
1. Stop. Take some time to stop throughout the day and look around. Be aware of where you are and what’s around you. Become conscious of your surroundings and notice how you fit into them.
- Notice the details such as the green on the trees, or the condensation dripping down the side of the cup.
- Become in tune with what your body feels and actually search out the sensations of your fingers and toes while feeling your chest rise and fall with each breath.
2. Breathe. Take deep breaths and be in the moment. Don’t think about what you’ve done or what you still have to do, just take a minute or two to just breathe!
3. Learn. Take a few minutes each day to try something new. Pick up a book you’ve wanted to read or learn a new skill. By doing this, you’re starting to become conscious of your life and the things you can do with it.
There are many things you can do to live life to its fullest. Living consciously is one of the easiest changes to make on a day-to-day basis. Take a few of these ideas, integrate them into your routine, and begin enjoying the benefits of living consciously!

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can do…Begin it!”
Goethe
I like this quote because it reminds me that in order to make my dreams come true I need to take action.
With all the attention being placed on the law of attraction and how we need to visualize and set our emotional frequency to one of positive energy, we tend to forget that without inspired action on our part, we may end up with nothing but frustration.
So use the power of positive thinking and visualization to get clear on what it is you do want in your life and then take inspired action, BEGIN IT, in order to draw it to you!
